On Saturday,
September 7, 2002, the Punjabi-American Cultural Association
held "A Cultural Evening", an event dedicated to
the victims and heroes of September 11th. The
event, which started off with a free dinner, was attended by
approximately 600 individuals. The audience consisted of
people from various cultures and backgrounds as well as
local politicians from cities such as Vacaville, Fairfield,
Suisun City, Vallejo, and American Canyon. Some of the
politicians in attendance included Fairfield Police Chief
Bill Gresham, Vacaville Mayor David Flemming, and American
Canyon Mayor Don Colcleasor among others.
The evening started
off with a social hour and a free dinner. After the Posting
of Colors, children, ages 3-13, came together and sang the
American National Anthem. Dr. Jasbir Kang of Yuba City,
presented "Indus Valley to Sacramento Valley", a
slide show on the history of Sikh migration to the United
States of America. Following the slide show, a few guests,
including Duane Kromm (Board of Supervisors - 3rd District)
and District Attorney David Paulson, made speeches.
After the speeches were given, the Sacramento Diamond Club
performed a Punjabi folk dance called Bhangra. The
last item of the night was a documentary titled,
"Mistaken Identity - Sikhs in America". The
documentary is seen through the eyes of a 23-year American
host, Amanda Gesine, who accidentally discovers the plight
of racial profiling of Sikhs in America after 9/11.
