On Saturday,
September 6, 2003, the Punjabi-American Cultural Association
held the "Punjabi Heritage Festival", an event dedicated to
the victims and heroes of September 11th. This is the second
consecutive year in which the Association has organized an event such
as this. Last year's event, "A Cultural Evening",
was held on September 7, 2002.
This year's event was organized very similar to last year's event. The
"Punajbi Heritage Festival", which was attended by approximately 1,000
individuals, started off with a free dinner for everyone. The 1,000
people in attendance included local and state politicians such as
Fairfield Mayor Karin MacMillan, Vacaville Mayor Len Augustine, and
The event consisted of a presentation, "Sikhs in America", by Dr. Bruce
LaBrack, from the University of the Pacific. Also, two groups of American
born youth, performed the popular punjabi folk dance called Bhangra.
Dholrhythms, a group of girls from San Francisco, presented a unique
mixture of Bhangra and Giddha (ladies folk dance), as well.
The evening ended with Janice Miller, a Punjabi singer of American origin,
singing various Punjabi melodies. Many people joined together
and danced on stage while Janice Miller entertained the audience.
