Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, Fairfield
2984 Rockville Road
Fairfield, CA
The Punjabi-American Cultural Association held a food drive in celebration of
Vaisakhi. The local Sikh community donated various food items to the cause. The
Association donated more than 2,800 pounds of food to the Solano Food Bank and to various
homeless shelters throughout the area.
Vaisakhi is the Sikh New Year and the anniversary of the creation of the
Khalsa. The Khalsa is the brotherhood of Saint Soldiers, created to fight against tyranny and
oppression. It was created by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699 after he administered Amrit
(Nectar) to the first five Sikhs and named them Singh (for males) and Kaur (for females).
The significance of donating food on Vaisakhi goes back to the beginning of
Sikhism, which was founded by Guru Nanak (first Sikh Guru). Guru Nanak taught his
followers to share with others. By donating the food, the Sikh community is sharing with
those that are less fortunate.
The Punjabi-American Cultural Association plans to make the food drive an
annual event on Vaisakhi and would like to thank everyone who donated food for this cause!
